Types of Financial Aid

 

  • Grants:  money that is given usually based on financial need.  Does not need to be repaid.  

 

  • Loans:  money borrowed either through the federal government or a private lender.  Must be repaid.  

 

  • Scholarships:  money awarded based on financial need, academic achievement, athletic or special ability, religious affiliation, ethnic background, special interests, organization memberships, or random drawings.  Do not need to be repaid.  

 

  • Work Study:  a federal program that funds part-time jobs on or off campus during college.  Many work study jobs are very flexible with class schedules and some allow you to work on homework during downtime!

FAFSA:  the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

  • This is available online at fafsa.ed.gov starting October 1st till June 30th if you intend to enroll in college for the 2017/2018 school year.   

  • This must be completed for any of the above types of financial aid to be awarded!
