College Application Week

What:
This is a week dedicated to having seniors apply for colleges/programs for the 2017/2018 school year. We will have labs set up for students to come and apply, they will also be using designated class time for applications.

When: October 31st-November 4th

Activities for the Week:

Instagram prop:

This will be a cut out of what looks like an Instagram post with a few different hashtags. Some examples are:  #Iapplied, #CollegeBound, #Class2K17. Students will have this prop available to them during the lab time, devoted to their English class, for applying to colleges. The prop will also be available at lunch for students as well. We will also require that students tag our Near Peer Mentor Instagram/Facebook page so that we can get them more involved with those pages. Every time a student(s) uses the hashtags and tags our pages we will enter a ticket with their name on it for a raffle.

“USA Map” Poster:

This will be a HUGE poster of the United States. We will have it hung up in the commons at lunch with a table of stars cut out laying on it. As Seniors apply to colleges they can place stars on the states or areas where they applied with their names on it. This map will be hung up all week. Once the week is over we will hang the poster somewhere in the school for everyone to see.

Scavenger Hunt: Tuesday, November 2nd , 2016

The scavenger hunt can be a lunch activity or when the students aren’t in class. It will have a list of “FIND ME” items based off of the teachers “about me” sheet outside their classroom doors. These will be super specific to exact teachers so it will be more challenging and engaging. Students who participate in the scavenger hunt and complete it will get a ticket to put into a raffle for a $15-20 gift card to Target.

“I Applied” Poster:

This will be another huge poster that we will have for students hanging up outside the lab where applications are being done. Once a student completes application(s) they get to write their name and if they want the school(s) they applied to on the poster. After the week we will have this poster hanging on the opposite floor of the USA poster. That way both floors are covered.

Lunch time College Logo guessing game:  Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016

This will be an activity for both lunches for ALL grade levels. The Near Peers will have a microphone and then posters with a variety of college logos drawn on them. The rules of the game are that it is that the first person to raise their hands gets to try their answer. If the student guesses correctly they get to come up and grab a $5 gift card from JAMMS Frozen Yogurt, Dutch Bros, or Kokapellis. We are going to try and get these donated to us.

“I applied” Raffle:

Seniors will be using their English classes to be in lab 126 to apply to at least 1 college. They should bring a list of at least 3 that they want to apply to and their SS#. Every time a senior completes an application they get to place a raffle ticket into a bin. If a student only applies to one school he/she only gets one ticket. If he/she applies to 10 schools they get 10 tickets, etc. Seniors are entering to win a mini Keurig coffee maker or a mini fridge. The drawing will be done on Friday November 4th, 2016 and an announcement for the winners will be made during the afternoon announcements. This gives students the whole week to put in not only as many tickets as they can but all the applications they want.
